Chiropractors spend much of our time helping our patients relieve their neck pain, back pain, headaches, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This year I am doing all I can to regain some of the health that I have lost along the way.&amp;nbsp; As I have aged, I notice changes in my energy levels, my anxiety levels, my ability to get a good nights sleep, etc.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I eat reasonably well avoiding fast food and soda.&amp;nbsp; I never have candy or chocolate in my house and I try to watch my fat intake.&amp;nbsp; While this diet plan has kept me in decent shape in regards to my weight, my blood pressure and cholesterol level, I still feel like age is creeping up on me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You guys remember fitness guru Jack Lalanne don’t you?&amp;nbsp; He is 93 years old, maybe older.&amp;nbsp; That guy looks like he is 60 and can probably beat me and most of you in every test of physical strength and aerobic conditioning.&amp;nbsp; If I keep going in my current direction, I will be in a wheel chair at 93 – if I am alive at all!&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think that most of us want the same things from a health standpoint.&amp;nbsp; We want to not only &lt;b&gt;look healthy but we want to be healthy&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Health improvement&lt;/b&gt; can only be accomplished through proper nutrition and exercise.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the last 20 years or so I have been a vitamin / supplement consumer.&amp;nbsp; Truthfully, I am hit and miss with taking my supplements.&amp;nbsp; The reason for my departures is the fact that I have no real guide for what I should be taking.&amp;nbsp; At least until now!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In our pursuit of a healthier body, both Linda and I recently had our hair tested for mineral content (Hair Mineral Analysis).&amp;nbsp; The results of my tests were what I would expect for a guy (me) that is forty something and has no real basis for taking the supplements that I have been taking over the last 20 years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The lab that we used provides a full breakdown of the content of nutrient minerals, toxic minerals (including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum) and a ratio of significant minerals.&amp;nbsp; Maybe I am pessimistic but I always think that they set me and many of you up for failure. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Case in point, many of the patients in my Chiropractic office in San Diego have already faltered with their new diets and exercise programs for this New Year.&amp;nbsp; Sometimes they fail with their resolutions simply because the changes involved in their new resolutions are too much of a drastic change from their prior lifestyle.&amp;nbsp; Others expect too much of themselves on a physical level and end up in my office complaining of neck pain, back pain, sprains, strains and other exercise related pains.&amp;nbsp; Many people at this point make a comment about how “getting in shape is killing them”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I always enter the New Year with the thought that I will do just a little better than I did the last year.&amp;nbsp; This is especially true with diet and exercise.&amp;nbsp; Although I am a health care professional, I do succumb to the temptations of the bean rice and cheese burrito or the piece of pizza with extra cheese.&amp;nbsp; Likewise, I find myself getting run down from time to time and I loose my desire to exercise.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Failing in my diet and exercise are two downfalls that have an immediate impact on my well being.&amp;nbsp; When exercise goes by the wayside I have less energy, I tier easily and I sleep poorly.&amp;nbsp; When I blow my diet I feel fat, bloated and most of all guilty.&amp;nbsp; These responses to failures in my diet and exercise make me wonder why I fail.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The benefits of maintaining a healthy diet and following a challenging exercise regimen are easily identified.&amp;nbsp; Following a reasonable diet and getting enough exercise make me feel good!&amp;nbsp; It may be &lt;b&gt;neck pain, back pain, headaches, leg pain, arm pain&lt;/b&gt; etc. etc. etc. – you get it.&lt;br /&gt;For the most part, these patients are not really responsible for the cause of their &lt;b&gt;pain&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; They were injured by a fall, a whiplash accident, a work comp related accident a sports injury or some other sort of accident.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That being the case, some are directly responsible for their pain – which takes me back to the title of this article – and the answer.&amp;nbsp; THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT YOU CAN EVER DO FOR YOURSELF IS TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!&amp;nbsp; INCLUDING YOUR HEALTH!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will follow this statement by admitting that even though I have been treating patients and handing out advise on health for over 15 years that I do not always make the wisest choices regarding my own health.&amp;nbsp; I find this frustrating.&amp;nbsp; A recent example involves a soda that I bought the other day.&amp;nbsp; I succumbed to a craving.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;That soda was the inspiration for this blog post.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the past, I have written at least one article on the ill effects of soda.&amp;nbsp; When I do cave in to my occassional desire to drink a soda, I usually hit the internet to review the reasons why it is so bad for us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Years ago, I had given up coffee – all coffee – even decaf.&amp;nbsp; What I didn’t give up was caffiene.&amp;nbsp; I got my daily caffiene fix from diet Coke.&amp;nbsp; It took me awhile to figure it out but eventually I recognized that soda made me anxious.&amp;nbsp; Especially regular soda.&amp;nbsp; There came a time that I knew I had to give it up – for the sake of my health.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For over five years I drank no coffee or soda.&amp;nbsp; I felt pretty good as a result.&amp;nbsp; My digestion was better, my anxiety faded and my feelings regarding my own health improved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this point I do have a soda once in awhile – which aggravates me to no end.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In researching the current literature for the ill effects of soda, I found an article that &lt;b&gt;links soda to gout&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; This article sited studies that indicate that drinking regular soda, not diet soda, has a significant effect on your chances of developing &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; The study found that consumption of two or more &lt;b&gt;soft drinks each day upped gout risk by 85%&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; The same study found that one soft drink each day &lt;b&gt;upped gout risk by 45%&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Beer raises gout risk by 49%&lt;/b&gt; per daily serving. A daily serving of &lt;b&gt;spirits raises gout&lt;/b&gt; risk by 15%. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those of you who do not know, &lt;b&gt;Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis&lt;/b&gt; in which uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints.&amp;nbsp; It most commonly affects the big toe but commonly affects other joints in the leg.&amp;nbsp; While men are more likely to suffer &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt; than are women, a woman's risk greatly increases after menopause.&amp;nbsp; About one in 10 people over the age of &lt;b&gt;60 develops gout&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt; flair up can cause weeks of suffering.&amp;nbsp; It is very severe pain.&amp;nbsp; I had a &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt; attack in the early 1990s and I can say that it was the worst pain I have ever had to endure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My &lt;b&gt;gout attack&lt;/b&gt; affected my big toe and recall excruciating pain with any kind of contact on that toe – sleeping was a nightmare.&amp;nbsp; Anytime the sheet touched my toe it sent me through the roof!&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Gout causes intense pain and swelling&lt;/b&gt;, one of the worst pains you can suffer.&lt;br /&gt;This study has been significant because it is the first one that links these commonly consumed drinks to &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; That being said, the study definitely &lt;b&gt;links soft drinks to gout&lt;/b&gt; risk, but it does not prove that cutting back on soft drinks will lower that risk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wheather or not your family history predisposes you to &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt; formation or not, you have to realize that high-fructose carbonated beverages don't have any nutritional benefit what so ever.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The association of &lt;b&gt;gout&lt;/b&gt; with soda consumption is just one more reason to eliminate soda from our diets.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The point of this article is to draw your attention to the fact that we have a tremendous amount of control of our own health.&amp;nbsp; is vital to the health and function of our bodies.&amp;nbsp; Many of my San Diego Chiropractic patients don’t fully understand the need for sound &lt;b&gt;nutrition&lt;/b&gt; or why we stress the &lt;b&gt;importance of nutrition&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Poor nutrition&lt;/b&gt; can cause or contribute to fatigue, anxiety, aches and pains. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is at the root of our &lt;b&gt;poor nutrition&lt;/b&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;High carbohydrate, low protein diets.&lt;br /&gt;2)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Poor quality synthetic vitamins taken as supplements.&lt;br /&gt;3)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Poor food quality.&amp;nbsp; Soil mineral depletion and demineralization combined with excessive use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides as well as over-processed food that have been enriched with synthetics and preservatives has led to foods that are far less nutritious than in the past. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Proper nutrition&lt;/b&gt; begins with cleaning poor quality, over processed foods out of your diet and replacing them with organically grown fresh vegetables and fruits.&amp;nbsp; You also have to select high quality animal proteins or whey protein supplements since many animal proteins contain synthetic steroids and other injected hormones to promote rapid growth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, a &lt;b&gt;good nutrition&lt;/b&gt; Since I am a chiropractor in San Diego, I can’t help but notice that a fairly large portion of my patients are trying to lose weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Losing weight is not only a noble endeavor but a difficult one.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Losing weight is not only good for your cardiovascular health but also for your health in general.&amp;nbsp; Losing extra weight is very important to your skeletal health as well.&amp;nbsp; Every extra pound that you carry puts a little more stress through your spinal joints causing excessive wear and tear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Excessive wear and tear results in arthritis, neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatic pain, hip pain, knee pain etc.&amp;nbsp; I am of the opinion that less pain is better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chiropractic care is an important part of your efforts to maintain your spinal health.&amp;nbsp; That being said, you should not dismiss the importance of keeping fit as it directly relates to your spines’ ability to withstand the stresses of a long life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since I am sure that at least some of my patients’ problems are due to the fact that they carry excess weight, I thought I would give a few suggestions for successful weight loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Remember that weight control is your responsibility.&amp;nbsp; Having a weight loss partner who agrees to “watch out for you” will only inspire you to cheat while they are not watching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Don’t let a single failure in your diet degrade into a whole day of poor diet choices.&amp;nbsp; If you blow a part of your diet, don’t view your entire day of eating as a failure and consume junk all day.&amp;nbsp; Pick up your good diet choices the next time you have a meal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Don’t start dieting prior to holidays or vacations where you will be tempted by overindulging making it difficult to lose weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Don’t weigh your self more than a few times each month.&amp;nbsp; Losing weight takes time which isn’t compatible with Americans desire for instant results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5)&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; While I am not thrilled with the fact that holiday obligations take precedent over the excellent chiropractic care that we strive to deliver, it is in fact the case.&amp;nbsp; That being said, since our concerns do lie with our patients’ health as a whole, we do stress the importance of &lt;b&gt;healthy eating habits&lt;/b&gt; during the holidays.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Parties and celebrations during the holiday season present a challenge to &lt;b&gt;healthy eating habits&lt;/b&gt; since there are many opportunities to &lt;b&gt;overeat and indulge&lt;/b&gt; on special foods that we don't normally &lt;b&gt;eat&lt;/b&gt;. Try some of the following tips to achieve balance and keep your &lt;b&gt;eating habits&lt;/b&gt; in check:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Don't starve yourself:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not &lt;b&gt;eating&lt;/b&gt; all day before a party or holiday meal usually results in &lt;b&gt;excess hunger and overeating&lt;/b&gt; later. It's okay to &lt;b&gt;eat light meals&lt;/b&gt; during the day to save up some calories for the main meal. If this is your strategy, before leaving the house, have some fruit, low fat milk or veggies to curb your appetite and off-set your impending "bad" calories . &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Make wise choices:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before loading your plate, browse all the selections and decide what foods you'd like to enjoy and which you can skip without feeling too deprived. Set a reasonable limit for what and how much you are going to &lt;b&gt;eat&lt;/b&gt;. Chew gum to avoid excess snacking! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Slow down:&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Try to &lt;b&gt;eat slowly&lt;/b&gt; and enjoy the special treats that you've selected. Eating fast increases the chances of taking second helpings. Spend time socializing with family and friends in order to take the emphasis off of the food. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Be prepared:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are going to spend hours traveling by car or out at the mall shopping, pack a few &lt;b&gt;healthy snacks&lt;/b&gt; to decrease the chances of &lt;b&gt;eating fast foods&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Carry fruit, low fat cheese, whole grain crackers, or a few nuts to curb your appetite and prevent excess hunger. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Limit your alcohol intake:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some mixed drinks can contain up to 1100 calories! Also, alcohol increases your appetite and hampers decision making leading to the consumption of more calories. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Set a good example:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are the host or hostess, offer some &lt;b&gt;healthy choices&lt;/b&gt; such as veggies and low calorie dip. Many of your guests will be delighted to have these tasty alternatives as they are trying to watch their diets too!&amp;nbsp; More and more people are trying to avoid gaining those "Holiday Pounds." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Stay active:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is easy to let your exercise routine collapse during the holidays. That being said, misalignment of the upper cervical vertebra don’t explain all cases of &lt;b&gt;migraine&lt;/b&gt; &lt;b&gt;headaches&lt;/b&gt; because all of my patients don’t get better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other different theories about the cause of migraines include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vascular pressure changes in your brain; from initial blood vessel constriction and a drop in blood flow, followed by dilation and stretching of blood vessels, which activates pain-signaling neurons.&amp;nbsp; These dialations and constrictions can include blood flow increases of up to 300%.&lt;br /&gt;Changes in your serotonin levels; when levels drop, blood vessels including those in your brain become swollen and inflamed, which can lead to migraine pain. &lt;br /&gt;Neurological disorders; related to nerve cell activity that crosses your brain, causing pain. In this case, it is thought that the release of neurotransmitters across the cortex of your brain can directly stimulate the trigeminal nerves found in your brain stem, setting off a chain reaction that ends in the pain signals of a migraine.&lt;br /&gt;A nervous system disorder involving your brain stem. Your brain stem is your control center for alertness, perception of light, noise and smell, cerebral blood flow, cardiovascular function and pain sensitivity -- many, if not most, of which are part of the symptoms of a migraine attack. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Typically a person who experiences &lt;b&gt;migraines&lt;/b&gt; often can identify a “trigger” that they can point to as the culprit of their headaches.&amp;nbsp; If you have &lt;b&gt;migraines&lt;/b&gt; and have not attempted to identify your triggers you should.&amp;nbsp; The following is list of some common migraine triggers. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Allergies: Including food allergies / sensitivities and chemical sensitivities. &lt;br /&gt;Dehydration and / or hunger &lt;br /&gt;Changes in sleeping patterns: Both missing sleep and oversleeping can trigger a migraine. &lt;br /&gt;Stress: Emotional stress or trauma can trigger a migraine. &lt;br /&gt;Physical exertion: Intense exercise has been known to bring on migraines. &lt;br /&gt;Hormones: Some women experience migraines before, or during their periods, during pregnancy, or during menopause. &lt;br /&gt;Other factors: Bright lights, fluorescent lights, loud noises and strong smells (even pleasant ones) can trigger a migraine.&amp;nbsp; Weather changes, seasonal changes, and changes in altitude can also act as a trigger for a migraine. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of the above causes of migraines are significant and some are downright scary.&amp;nbsp; New research studies, however, point to a few potential cures of migraines that just may work for you.&amp;nbsp; A recent study found that vitamin supplementation of vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid has the potential to reduce the frequency and severity of migrains.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recent studies have also found that 42% of those suffering from migraine headaches are also suffering from a vitamin D deficiency.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It follows that supplementation of B6, B12, folic acid and vitamin D may provide significant migraine relief for a portion of you reading this post.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I know that personally I have to dig deep within myself to avoid fattening and sugary foods.&amp;nbsp; I also have to keep my supplements in plain sight or I will forget to take them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Supplements are important for those who suffer from neck pain, back pain or any other type of joint pain.&amp;nbsp; They are especially important for those who are recovering from injuries such as car accidents, work injuries and sports injuries.&amp;nbsp; Nutritional support for injured muscles and ligaments is important during the various healing stages.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The following recommendations cover nutritional support for bone and joint health as it relates to sprain / strain injuries.&amp;nbsp; That being said, these recommendations will also help you maintain your spinal health.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nutritional support is a valuable asset to your chiropractic care.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The following supplements are considered very important. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chondroitin Sulfate:&amp;nbsp; 500 – 1000 mg daily - Nutritional support for strengthening joints, ligaments and tendons&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Glucosamine Sulfate:&amp;nbsp; Take as directed.&amp;nbsp; -&amp;nbsp; Very important for the formation of bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and synovial (joint) fluid&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MSM:&amp;nbsp; know that I recently experienced a significant improvement in my health as a result of a radical diet change that was part of the Standard Process Purification Diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Through the course of this diet, I discovered the negative impact of the &lt;b&gt;processed foods and sugars&lt;/b&gt; on my health.&amp;nbsp; As a doctor who is concerned for my patients health needs beyond the common complaints of neck pain, back pain and headaches, I always encourage them to do better for themselves where diet is concerned.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With that theme in mind, I stumbled across this great list of all the bad things that &lt;b&gt;processed sugars &lt;/b&gt;do to you.&amp;nbsp; The list is composed by Nancy Appleton, Ph.D., who is a nutritional consultant, researcher, lecturer, and author of &lt;b&gt;Lick the Sugar Habit&lt;/b&gt;, Healthy Bones, and Balanced Body Secret.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Sugar&lt;/b&gt; can suppress the immune system. &lt;br /&gt;2.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Sugar upsets&lt;/b&gt; the minerals in the body. &lt;br /&gt;3.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Rear end car accidents only make up about 25% of all car crashes, yet they account for about 40% of all car crash injuries.  Research has shown that subjects can have whiplash injuries in rear end collisions of less than 5 mph, probably slower than you drive in a parking lot.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is one reason why whiplash injuries make up such a large percentage of auto accident injuries.  Almost half of Americans who suffer from chronic neck pain, attribute it to a previous whiplash injury.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whiplash pain usually involves some or all of these symptoms, reduced neck range of motion, neck pain, muscle pain, or headaches.  If you experience any of the symptoms after a car accident then you should see an auto injury specialist immediately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is common for whiplash pain to not show up until weeks or months after the accident.  Most of these people are the ones who never get help for their pain, and are at much greater risk for developing chronic neck pain in the future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a chiropractor that specializes in treating whiplash and other car accident injuries, I can attest to the importance of seeking treatment for a whiplash injury and not just dulling the pain with over the counter or prescription drugs. is a common problem among adults.&amp;nbsp; I have read studies that indicate that at any one time approximately 75% of American adults are suffering with mild symptoms that result from being dehydrated.&amp;nbsp; Being a chiropractor in San Diego, a desert community, we see many people suffering from ailments ranging from neck pain and headaches to lower back pain that carries some link to &lt;b&gt;dehydration&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The human body is approximately 65% water.&amp;nbsp; By definition, &lt;b&gt;dehydration&lt;/b&gt; occurs as the result of excessive loss of water from the body.&amp;nbsp; This occurs as a direct result of not taking in enough water.&amp;nbsp; That is a very superficial explanation of &lt;b&gt;dehydration&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In reality, it's a bit more complicated than that since the body loses electrolytes as well as fluids. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Dehydration&lt;/b&gt; is a major issue with our health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A common scene in professional sports is that of the athletes becoming dehydrated and “cramping up”.&amp;nbsp; This cramping of muscles affects us normal (non-professional athletes) people as well.&amp;nbsp; We suffer from back spasms, neck pain and many other similar symptoms as a result of &lt;b&gt;dehydration&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Headaches are another &lt;b&gt;common symptom of dehydration&lt;/b&gt; that needs to be taken into account.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Dehydration&lt;/b&gt; has long been known to be a trigger of Migraine type headaches.&amp;nbsp; It is staggering to think of how many dollars are spent for treatment of headaches when the &lt;b&gt;underlying culprit is dehydration&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people mistakenly think that &lt;b&gt;dehydration only occurs in hot weather&lt;/b&gt; and that you're not dehydrated if you're not thirsty.&amp;nbsp; Usually by the time you feel thirsty you are already &lt;b&gt;dehydrated.&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Dehydration Facts:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; It takes about 64 to 80 ounces to replace the water our bodies lose in 24 hours. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Normally, how much water we need depends on the volume of our perspiration and urine output. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Our bodies' need for water increases under circumstances such as: &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Living in warmer climates &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Living at high altitudes &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Increased physical activity &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; With vomiting or diarrhea &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; With fever &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; When you have a cold or the flu &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Those with chronic disease such as uncontrolled or untreated diabetes &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Losing as little as 1 to 2% of body weight can result in dehydration. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Losing 3 to 5% can negatively impact reaction time, concentration and judgment &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Losing 9 - 15% results in severe dehydration and is life-threatening. &lt;br /&gt;Dehydration Symptoms:&lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Excessive thirst &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Fatigue &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Muscle weakness &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Headache &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Dizziness &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Less frequent need to urinate and decreased output &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Darker colored urine (should be nearly clear to pale yellow) &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Confusion &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Increased heart rate and respirations &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Skin that doesn't snap back when pinched and released &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Children may exhibit additional symptoms: &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Absence of tears when crying &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; No wet diaper for three hours or longer &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Irritability &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Lethargy &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Fever &lt;br /&gt;When caught early, dehydration can usually be treated at home.&amp;nbsp; Common treatments include: &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Mild dehydration: rehydration by drinking fluids including sports drinks, which rehydrate by providing not only fluid, but also electrolytes and salt. In children, products such as Pedialyte may be recommended as it also contains carbohydrates to help absorption in the intestinal tract. Coffee, tea, and soda should not be used for dehydration as the caffeine in them can actually be dehydrating. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Moderate dehydration: rehydration may suffice, but IV fluids may be required. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Severe dehydration: Immediate action must be taken, treating the situation as a medical emergency. Hospital treatment is necessary for IV fluids to rehydrate more quickly and efficiently and to allow observation. &lt;br /&gt;As with most ailments,&amp;nbsp; it's better to prevent dehydration than to treat it.&amp;nbsp; Here are some preventative steps you can take: &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Drink plenty of fluids and eat foods high in water. Fruit contains the most water, followed by vegetables, meat, then grains with the least. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Choose your beverages wisely. Caffeine and alcohol can be dehydrating. For some people, too much fruit juice can cause diarrhea, which can be dehydrating. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; If you're planning a day with more significantly exercise than usual, begin hydrating the day before. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Sports drinks can help maintain electrolyte balance, but be aware of the sugars in them. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; If you're organizing outdoor activities, provide shaded areas. &lt;br /&gt;•&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; When you're ill, be sure to continue drinking fluids, and get additional fluids if you have a fever or are vomiting or have diarrhea. They reviewed evidense that showed that fish oil consumption&amp;nbsp; extended to two very serious eye problems. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first of these problems helped by fish oil is age-related macular degeneration.&amp;nbsp; Macular degeneration is the disruption of the center of the retina where the fine nerve complex at the back of the eye essential for all fine visual tasks rests. Macular degereration is the leading cause of age-related blindness. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fish oil protects the eyes from age-related macular degeneration because of a component of fish oil called docosahexaenoic acid also known as DHA.&amp;nbsp; DHA is one of the omega-3 fatty acids linked to other health benefits. DHA helps vision by building up in the eye near light-sensing nerve cells. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“National Eye Institute researcher John Paul SanGiovanni, ScD, and colleagues analyzed dietary data from 4,513 60- to 80-year-old participants in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study. Those who ate fish more than twice a week were half as likely to get macular degeneration as those who ate no fish at all. More than one weekly portion of broiled/baked fish or tuna lowered the risk by a third. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The risk for [age-related macular degeneration] was significantly decreased for the highest versus the lowest quintiles of total [omega-3 fatty acids] intake," SanGiovanni and colleagues write in their abstract.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In another study, fish oil was found to protect the eyes from dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome is a condition in which a person's eyes don't make enough tears. Dry eyes can lead to scarring of the cornea and vision loss. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A study of&amp;nbsp; 32,470 female health professionals found that women whose diets had the most omega-3 fatty acids were far less likely to have dry eye syndrome.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Women who ate two to four servings of tuna a week had an 18% lower risk of dry eye syndrome than those who ate less tuna. Complex carbohydrates like whole grains can also be eliminated or sharply reduced for up to a week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next step is to eliminate animal-based proteins. Animal-based proteins include pork, red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. These proteins are dense and highly nourishing foods and are unsuitable for a cleanse. These foods come from animals that are high on the food chain and are likely to carry environmental toxins. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During this cleanse, we can eat plant-sourced protein in small quantities.&amp;nbsp; The best choice for plant based proteins is simple well-cooked whole grain and bean combinations.&amp;nbsp; In general the smaller the bean, the easier it is to digest.&amp;nbsp; The mung bean is well-known for its cleansing and protective qualities.&amp;nbsp; Brown rice and lentils are another good complete protein combination. Nuts and seeds also provide protein but are higher in fat and best eaten fresh in very small quantities or avoided altogether.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Organic fruits are perhaps the best cleansers and are best if eaten alone. &lt;br /&gt;Your cleansing diet can be supported by gentle stretching, aerobic exercise, deep breathing, chiropractic care and massage. In addition to helping my patients with the typical neck pain, back pain and headaches that are common complaints for chiropractors, I also give advice regarding other lifestyle changes that help them become healthier people.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Food cravings&lt;/b&gt; are the downfall for many of us regarding our health.&amp;nbsp; I can’t recall what the disorders or deficiencies were, but I remember studying conditions that made some people crave dirt – that is right, people crave to eat dirt, and other deficiencies that made people crave aspirin.&amp;nbsp; Obviously, none of us would think that a nice plate of dirt for dinner would sound good without some underlying nutritional deficiency that would drive us to such a craving.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is interesting how mineral deficiencies can result in &lt;b&gt;cravings&lt;/b&gt; of more typical &lt;b&gt;types of foods&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Naturopath Colleen Huber says that all &lt;b&gt;food cravings&lt;/b&gt; are a signal that our bodies are telling us that we need more of certain &lt;b&gt;types of foods&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; For example; when we crave sweets our bodies really need chromium, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur or tryptophan.&amp;nbsp; A craving for chocolate can be an indicator that you are deficient in magnesium while a &lt;b&gt;craving for salty foods&lt;/b&gt; is an indication that we are chloride deficient.&amp;nbsp; If you crave soda or other carbonated drinks what you really need is calcium.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is incredibly valuable information.&amp;nbsp; Once again, as a chiropractor I am not only concerned with relieving my patients back pain or neck pain but I am concerned about their health as a whole.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Poor diets&lt;/b&gt; are fueled by &lt;b&gt;cravings&lt;/b&gt; Sure, they often come to my office complaining of neck pain, back pain or headaches, but usually at some point the topic of nutrition comes up.&amp;nbsp; At that point I usually ask the question - Are you a &lt;b&gt;soy consumer&lt;/b&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt; is everywhere now days.&amp;nbsp; It can be found in bread, cakes, baby formula, milk, meat substitutes, cereal, snack foods and even pet foods.&amp;nbsp; As most of you know you can even get &lt;b&gt;soy-based&lt;/b&gt; drinks at Starbucks.&amp;nbsp; In fact, almost every time that I have been in Starbucks I have overheard customers ordering a “&lt;b&gt;Soy Chai Latte&lt;/b&gt;” something or other intentionally.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In many cases, &lt;b&gt;soy&lt;/b&gt; seems to be the answer to many peoples diet concerns.&amp;nbsp; Those who are lactose intolerant use &lt;b&gt;soymilk&lt;/b&gt; and &lt;b&gt;soy burgers&lt;/b&gt; are seen as an ideal protein substitute for those who are vegetarians. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt;, however, has some very real health complications for its consumers.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt; is an estrogen precursor and can cause a host of side effects in both women and men.&amp;nbsp; Like most hormones, elevated levels of estrogen come with dangers.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt; can trigger the growth of estrogen based fibrotic tumors in women and result in the formation of breast tissue in men (gynecomastia). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people have allergies to &lt;b&gt;soy&lt;/b&gt; that can cause everything from mal-absorption to full blown allergic reactions that include upset stomachs, excessive mucus production, vomiting and hives.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to elevated estrogen levels, &lt;b&gt;soymilk&lt;/b&gt; contains nearly 100 times the aluminum that is found in cow’s milk.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; In a report issued in 1997 by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition, aluminum levels in breast milk ranged from 4 to 65 ng/mL while &lt;b&gt;soy-based formulas&lt;/b&gt; contained 600 to 1300 ng/mL.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; As many of you may know, research is leaning heavily toward aluminum as a contributor to Alzheimer’s disease. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt; is neither safe nor natural.&amp;nbsp; It is heavily processed with a variety of toxic chemicals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Soy&lt;/b&gt; is often offered as a healthier and natural alternative to our normal foods.&amp;nbsp; However, there are many problems with &lt;b&gt;soy&lt;/b&gt;, and I see my chiropractic patients struggle with physical symptoms secondary to &lt;b&gt;soy consumption&lt;/b&gt; on a regular basis.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back in the early part of April, I posted a blog article regarding chiropractic care and &lt;b&gt;nutrition&lt;/b&gt;, specifically, my own &lt;b&gt;nutrition&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Being the owner of my San Diego Chiropractic office, I spend most of my days treating patients with neck pain and back pain.&amp;nbsp; While neck pain and back pain are very important to resolve, there are other health concerns that must be addressed if we expect to be truly healthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Several months ago, I had a hair mineral analysis performed on myself.&amp;nbsp; The results of that test were surprising to me.&amp;nbsp; Aside from my calcium and magnesium levels, every other nutrient mineral was deficient.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even iron!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I had indicated in prior posts on this topic, one of my primary health concerns over the last 10 years has been lack of restful sleep or insomnia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I read up on the minerals that I was deficient in, insomnia was a side effect in two of them in instances of deficiency.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That bit of knowledge was not enough to quiet the skeptic in me.&amp;nbsp; After all, the company that does the hair mineral analysis also makes the vitamins and minerals that they recommended to me.&amp;nbsp; In addition, I also indicated on my paperwork that insomnia is one of my health concerns.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to test these results, I bought mineral supplements from a local source and began taking them as directed on the containers.&amp;nbsp; It took about 11 days before I could say for sure that the quality of my sleep had improved.&amp;nbsp; Within a few more days the improvement was dramatic.&amp;nbsp; Prior to taking these mineral supplements, a good nights sleep was limited to two or three nights per month.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I write this blog post, I have slept well, over 7 hours per night, for the past month or so.&amp;nbsp; Despite all this quality sleep, I still feel like I am playing catch-up with my rest.&amp;nbsp; I suppose that is the result of 10 years of poor sleep.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will do future posts on this topic.&amp;nbsp; In the mean time, remember that you are what you eat!&amp;nbsp; Poor &lt;b&gt;dietary habits&lt;/b&gt; practice wants to be healthy.&amp;nbsp; The question is, however, what is health? And, how do we “get” healthy?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I always try to encourage health maintenance beyond the treatment of neck pain, back pain and headaches that represent the bulk of my patients’ concerns.&amp;nbsp; Many of my current patients entertain the idea of making lifestyle changes for the sake of improving their overall health picture.&amp;nbsp; That being said, some want nothing to do with it.&amp;nbsp; This is a shortsighted view of your health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I always explain to my patients that with the exception of some catastrophic injury, most cases of neck pain and back pain begin as a mild irritation that we are totally unaware of.&amp;nbsp; With time and additional stresses, these slight irritations can become magnified to the point where they become symptomatic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our &lt;b&gt;diets&lt;/b&gt; act the same way.&amp;nbsp; A few poor meal choices won’t destroy your health by themselves, but frequent poor meal choices over longer periods of time can have a significant negative impact on your health.&amp;nbsp; You only have to look at a McDonalds or Burger King drive-through to see the long lines of people making poor food choices.&amp;nbsp; These people who make frequent poor food choices (fast foods in this example) probably won’t suffer anything more than a little indigestion as a result of each meal.&amp;nbsp; However, the accumulation of the effects of all of these poor food choices will do damage down the road. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, this all becomes more apparent as we age.&amp;nbsp; We pay for our poor eating habits as we age for a couple of reasons.&amp;nbsp; First of all, poor eating choices become habitual.&amp;nbsp; Like any bad habit, changing poor eating habits is difficult.&amp;nbsp; Secondly, with normal aging, our metabolism slows making our poor eating habits more detrimental than they were when we were younger and more active.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Regaining your health takes work on several fronts.&amp;nbsp; Some of these things you can accomplish yourself and other things you need help with.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patients that come to my &lt;b&gt;chiropractic&lt;/b&gt; office for treatment for their neck pain or back pain often find this task one of the easy parts of getting healthy.&amp;nbsp; In order to get help with pain, all the patients have to do is come to the office for their treatment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The difficult part of restoring your health is dealing with the bad habits that result in ill health.&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;Unhealthy diets&lt;/b&gt;, smoking, drinking and the like are major culprits that can easily derail any efforts that we make with exercise and conservative &lt;b&gt;chiropractic &lt;/b&gt;treatment.&amp;nbsp; About six months ago I moved into a new place that did not have a microwave oven.  At the time of my move, I looked at getting a microwave oven as a priority; after all, I had not been without a microwave for about 30 years.  As time passed, I learned to live without the microwave.  I noticed that I was eating healthier, planning my meals better and feeling physically better by cooking my food on the stove, the old fashioned way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have just recently started hearing about how the microwave destroys the nutritional value of the food as it cooks.  I decided to do some research on this topic and found this interesting article.  I hope that you enjoy it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Healthy eating is not just about choosing healthy foods to eat, but also relates to how they are prepared prior to eating. Vegetables, for instance, can suffer nutritional losses during cooking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A study this week has found, for instance, that boiling broccoli in water for just 10 minutes reduced the content of plant chemicals known as glucosinolates by 40 percent. Within the body, glucosinolates are converted into other compounds called isothiocyanates that are believed to have cancer-protective properties.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This research, conducted at Warwick Medical School, found that shorter cooking times, as expected, led to less degradation of glucosinolates: Just five minutes of boiling led to losses of only 15 percent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This recent research reminded me of a previous piece I wrote which summarized some of the research of the nutrient losses that can occur with different methods of cooking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Microwaving is often recommended as a preferred cooking method because it can shorten the cooking time. However, the evidence suggests that this form of cooking can lead to considerable nutrient losses. In a study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, researchers assessed the effects of a variety of cooking methods on nutrient levels in broccoli.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While boiled broccoli was found to lose two-thirds of its original content of disease-protective nutrients known as flavonoids, this actually compared quite favorably with the whopping 97 percent loss induced by microwave cooking. Analysis of other nutrients revealed similarly dire depreciations. Contrary to what may be expected, it seems we can microwave goodbye to a good deal of the nutritional goodness vegetables have to offer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this study, steaming induced only 11 percent degradation in this type of flavonoids. In another study, boiling was found to reduce the level of folate (believed to protect against both heart disease and cancer) in spinach and broccoli by more than half. In comparison, steaming had minimal effects on the level of this vitamin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What the research shows is that when it comes to cooking vegetables, steaming is generally best. And the shorter the cooking time, the better. talk about digestive disorders and the effects of probiotics on a regular basis.&amp;nbsp; This may surprise some of you who think that the only chiropractors deal with are neck pain, back pain and headaches. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Probiotics are the “good” bacteria that are similar to those found in the human digestive tract.&amp;nbsp; With more and more frequency, probiotics are found in foods such as milkshakes, baby food, yogurts, smoothies, snack bars, cereals, baby formula and even chocolate.&amp;nbsp; These foods carry labels of major companies like Dannon and Kraft.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The experts say that these probiotics are safe and probably helpful but more research is needed in order to fully understand the benefits of these nutrients.&amp;nbsp; The fact that these experts even exist is a reflection of the growing understanding of the role that naturally occurring intestinal bacteria play in our health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adding to the health trend created by probiotics is the development of probiotics which contain&lt;br /&gt;fiber and other nutrients that feed probiotic bacteria.&amp;nbsp; In 2007, more than 150 probiotic and prebiotic commercial food products were introduced into the U.S. market, compared with 100 in 2006 and just 40 in 2005.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many probiotic products haven't been put to a rigorous scientific test, but there is plenty of evidence that in large amounts, some kinds of "friendly" bacteria can be quite helpful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Studies have shown that certain probiotics help treat or prevent some types of gastroenteritis, diarrhea and allergic skin reactions, and the probiotics are being investigated for many other ailments.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just recently the National Institute of Health declared the study of gastrointestinal bacteria and probiotics a major research initiative. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Probiotics have been subject to studies all over the world. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Canadian study published last month suggested that fermented milk containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casein could help prevent antibiotic-related diarrhea. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A study from Finland published this year found that an oat drink containing Bifidobacterium lactis bacteria helped bowel function in nursing home residents. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scientists in Argentina are investigating whether milk fermented with lactic acid bacteria might reduce amounts of cancer-causing substances in the intestine. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;University of California at Los Angeles researchers are looking at whether probiotic supplements can treat allergy-induced skin rashes in babies. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Israeli scientists are studying whether these supplements can improve complications in liver disease. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Probiotics are not a new concept.&amp;nbsp; While I had a fantastic educational experience in nutrition 18 years ago in chiropractic college, my implementation of my nutritional education has been absent from my San Diego chiropractic office.&amp;nbsp; I take some responsibility for this as my focus has been on helping patients with specific complaints of neck pain, low back pain, headaches and the like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Secondly, before I implement anything into my patients’ care I like to be on board with it so I can have first hand experience with its benefits.&amp;nbsp; Nutrition is no different.&amp;nbsp; I have been hit and miss with my diet and supplements for years – it is time for a change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To recap my first post on this topic, I had a hair mineral analysis performed approximately on e month ago.&amp;nbsp; The results revealed deficiencies in many nutrient minerals.&amp;nbsp; Some of the minerals that I was deficient in have the ability to cause anxiety and may affect my ability to sleep soundly.&amp;nbsp; Both anxiety and insomnia are conditions that I have struggled with for years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The lab that I used for my hair analysis not only provided a report regarding my deficiencies, but they also gave me a supplement recommendation list that I could use to restore proper mineral balance in my system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As of the date of this post, I have been taking my supplements as advised by the lab for about ten days.&amp;nbsp; At this point I feel a bit more clear headed and I have slept soundly for over 7 hours per night over the last three nights.&amp;nbsp; I know that three nights good sleep is not a fix, but it is unusual.&amp;nbsp; Although our office is delivering chiropractic care for neck pain, back pain and the like, we also encourage our patients to use natural remedies at home as well.&amp;nbsp; There are many benefits of using cinnamon in our diets.&amp;nbsp; There are also many different forms of cinnamon.&amp;nbsp; I recently came across this article and thought I would share it with you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A new report suggests that the equivalent of a spoonful of cinnamon a day can significantly lower blood sugar, cholesterol and lipid levels. This could be good news for people with diabetes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sixty people with type 2 diabetes were divided into six groups; three groups received daily doses of cinnamon (1, 3 or 6 grams, respectively), while the other groups received placebo capsules containing wheat flour. The cinnamon was consumed for 40 days, followed by a 20-day washout period. Blood glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels were all significantly lower in patients receiving cinnamon compared to those given a placebo. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While adding cinnamon to the diet won't cure a person with diabetes, it may help protect diabetic patients from some of the worst complications that arise from the condition, such as blurred vision, heart disease and kidney failure. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are a variety of ways that cinnamon can be incorporated into a person's diet, try adding it to your morning coffee or try eating oatmeal (which is very good for cholesterol) with a teaspoon of cinnamon, or making a tea out of boiling water and cinnamon stick.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reference:&lt;br /&gt;Khan A, Safdar M, Muzaffar Ali Khan M, et al. I would like to go back to 30 myself.&amp;nbsp; Of course there are some things we can do to help feel more youthful and have more energy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some San Diego Chiropractic offices include nutrition in their practices.&amp;nbsp; Nutrition is a logical component of helping patients regain and maintain their health.&amp;nbsp; That being said, I do have a good grasp of some of the concepts employed by chiropractors and other doctors regarding testing for nutritional deficiencies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have always liked measured outcomes.&amp;nbsp; Granted, in health care, many times “improvement” in a patients’ condition is driven by the patients’ symptoms.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In other words, when the patient is out of pain, they are done with care! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is seldom a good call, most of the time it isn’t.&amp;nbsp; Even doctors are advised against making judgments regarding delivery of care for their own illnesses.&amp;nbsp; After all, many patients are riddled with cancer or have major blockage in their hearts’ arteries yet the patient has no symptoms.&amp;nbsp; Like any of these conditions, treatment for even seemingly minor symptoms is best when delivered until the illness is completely resolved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our state of wellness is fleeting and worsened when we ignore signals that we are losing our health.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can develop mild symptoms like insomnia or anxiety or fatigue for example and attribute them to something other than some internal issue.&amp;nbsp; Often our symptoms are attributed to things such as work stress or relationship problems.&amp;nbsp; While those stresses are contributors to our symptoms, diet and ultimately nutrition take the lead role in producing symptoms of ill health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I recently made the decision to have a hair analysis performed for mineral content.&amp;nbsp; The lab that we are now using for hair analysis uses state of the art equipment to analyze the hair sample then they generate a report containing specifics regarding their findings.&amp;nbsp; They also include recommended supplements and gobs of information regarding the consequences of their findings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having considered myself above the average as far as my health goes, I was shocked by the reports findings.&amp;nbsp; The issues that I mentioned were insomnia and anxiety.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To back track just a little bit, I had read quite a bit about hair mineral analysis over the years and out of curiosity finally had one done.&amp;nbsp; My results revealed deficiencies in several minerals that can cause not only insomnia but anxiety.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had begun taking the minerals that I was deficient in and as of this last Monday I had three consecutive good nights sleep.&amp;nbsp; It is now Friday, April 04, 2008 and I have now had seven (7) great nights sleep.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the first time in years I don’t feel like I need a cup of coffee to get me started in the morning and I don’t feel myself running out of energy in the mid-afternoon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am not sure at this point how I am doing with my anxiety levels.&amp;nbsp; I definitely feel less anxious than I did.&amp;nbsp; That being the case, I am reasonably sure that the only stress that has reduced in my life is the stress that I used to have when I was trying to sleep.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Either way, I am sleeping better, MUCH BETTER, and my anxiety level seems to be lower.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I realize that I have only been doing this for a few weeks but this is encouraging.&amp;nbsp; My results thus far really makes me want to look at the rest of my health habits a bit harder.&amp;nbsp; Maybe a few adjustments in my diet such as eliminating a bit more refined sugar and simply resisting the urge to succumb to unhealthy cravings could help me attain a level of health that I have not had in years.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I have many patients in my chiropractic practice that specifically come to the chiropractor (me) for neck or cervical adjustments that help their allergies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As it is, millions of Americans alter their summer activities because of allergies.&amp;nbsp; For some of us, allergies mean having to limit outdoor activities during some seasons.&amp;nbsp; Having the ability to do yard work, play golf, horse around with the kids or take a walk around the park should all be part of summer-time fun.&amp;nbsp; For a few of us allergy sufferers, it can mean complete misery.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We typically use anti-histamines (both prescription and over the counter) to help to reduce the severity of our allergy symptoms.&amp;nbsp; These anti-histamines are not without side-effects, especially in children whose allergies may be treated with a lifetime of medication.&amp;nbsp; The downside of long term anti-histamine use is that they do not resolve the cause of the allergies, but merely reduce to symptom severity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For this reason, many people consider natural alternatives to anti-histamine medication as they are concerned about long term effects of the medication.&amp;nbsp; Allergies are caused by exaggerated immune responses therefore reducing allergies requires improving the health of the immune system.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are several ways to naturally boost immune system function:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nutritional support is vital for a properly functioning immune system.&amp;nbsp; Without essential nutrients, the body cannot produce the cells need for immune function.&amp;nbsp; The body expresses inadequate immune system function with allergic reactions.&amp;nbsp; A good initial approach is to eat more fruits and vegetables and drink more water.&amp;nbsp; Eating whole grains and fresh fish will help you consume complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids which are essential for a healthy immune system.&amp;nbsp; If food seems to be a source of your allergies, you may want to consider supplementing your improved diet with vitamins and minerals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise is also important in boosting immune function.&amp;nbsp; Aerobic exercise has been proven to help stimulate proper immune cells (Igg), and suppress histamine-producing immune cells (Ige).&amp;nbsp; Both of these cell types play critical roles in the immune response.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;Another critical way to improve immune system function is to improve nervous system function.&amp;nbsp; The nervous system regulates the immune system, therefore a properly functioning nervous system is better able to coordinated immune cell activity.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chiropractic adjustments have helped many allergy sufferers by improving the health of the nervous system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is that allergies are a response that we think we have no control over.
